The Great Neck Park District, The Open Space Committee and Great Neck North High School teamed up to plant thousands of saplings in Kings Point Park on May 31.
Hundreds of North High School students and faculty participated in this event called “Branch Out Day.”
In 2013, nearly 50 student volunteers from Great Neck North and South High School joined together in Kings Point Park to help remove fast-growing, invasive garlic mustard.
This year, Great Neck North High School President Matt Riegler, who attended a number of the Park District’s Open Space Committee Meetings, came up with the idea to help parks that lost many trees over the past few years. This was a perfect way to help replenish the landscape.
The Park District has since planted over 2,000 trees throughout our parks.
After the students finished the planting they spent the afternoon enjoying a student-faculty softball game while listening to a student DJ spin music and finished it off with a barbecue courtesy of the Park District. It was a day filled with socializing, learning and nature.
