At Tuesday night’s Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Laura Seinfeld said that the board had received a letter from the Oyster Bay High School class of 1974 Reunion Committee members. The letter stated that a former classmate, Marie Colvin, a renowned news journalist who died in 2012, should be honored at the class 40th Reunion which will be held on Oct. 11 of this year.
“The committee members sent us a proposal to have the school library dedicated to the name of Marie Colvin and to have a framed portrait and plaque of her in the library,” said Dr. Seinfeld. “The board gave approval for this plan.”
Marie Colvin was a veteran correspondent for the London’s Sunday Times newspaper. She was killed in Syria in February 2012 after rocket shellings hit a press center building that she was stationed in. She was in Syria to cover the ongoing war between government and civilian forces.

The board reviewed a policy which will be on the agenda at the June 17 business meeting. The policy focused on the banning of e-cigarettes in and around school property. E-cigarettes or electronic cigarettes are battery powered vaporizers which simulate tobacco smoking by producing a vapor that resembles smoke. The board of education already has a strict policy in place banning the use all nicotine containing products on school premises. The policy will be voted on at the June 17 meeting.
School Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Mulhall presented a professional development plan for teachers at the board meeting. The plan is comprised of teacher’s standards and strategies such as teachers demonstrating leadership and being knowledgeable in the content they teach.
Elementary school teachers Meagan Rogus and Jen Patti shared some of the plans for teacher professional development at the meeting.
