Village Redefines Driveways

This August, the Village of Farmingdale Board of Trustees will hear public comment on a proposed law to place new restrictions on driveway use.

According to Mayor Ralph Ekstrand, village code does not currently mandate size or shape of residential driveways. He said that presently, village residents could make it so their driveway takes up the entire front lawn.

In an effort to provide guidance on what residents can and cannot do with their driveways, the village plans to adopt an ordinance with definitive guidelines for redoing one’s own driveway.

While village officials say they plan to promote compliance with the new law, they do not plan to penalize any residents for not being up to code.

“We’re not going to be the driveway police,” Ekstrand said. “We just don’t want 50 percent of a person’s property to be their driveway.”

Ekstrand said the approval of local law no. 4 would help guide residents looking to redo their driveways at a future date.

Anyone who wants to comment is urged to attend the village meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4, when village officials are expected to make a decision on the proposed legislation.
