State Trooper Struck While Investigating Crash on Northern State

A state trooper investigating a one-car crash on the Northern State Parkway Saturday morning was injured when another car lost control and slammed into his vehicle, state police said.

The trooper was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash occurred at 7 a.m. on the right shoulder of the westbound lane at Exit 31A.

Police said the trooper was parked along the shoulder investigating the earlier crash when a 2006 Honda Civic driving in the left lane lost control and spun across the parkway. The Civic only came to a stop after striking the trooper’s vehicle on the driver’s side rear door, police said.

The driver of the Honda was also treated at Winthrop for minor cuts he sustained trying to help the trooper out of the vehicle.

Two lanes at Exit 31A were closed for nearly three hours.

Police did not provide details about the initial accident that the trooper was investigating.
