Port Native Receives Lax Honor

laxPort Washington native and St. John Bosco varsity lacrosse coach Ryland Huyghue was named 2014 U.S. Lacrosse Man of the Year for the Los Angeles region by LAX Power.

Huyghue, who played lacrosse as a teen in Port, is heavily involved in the sport as an adult and is an advocate for the expansion and development of lacrosse nationwide.

“We are blessed to have a man such as Ryland Huyghue running our lacrosse program,” said Casey Yeazel, principal of Los Angeles-based St. John Bosco High School. “Not only does Coach Huyghue possess unparalleled experience as a player and coach, he is also a man of character that is vested in the formation of his players as young men.”

The success that Bosco’s lacrosse team has had this year “has surpassed our most optimistic expectations, and is due in large part to Coach Huyghue’s vision and execution,” Yeazel said. “Being named U.S. lacrosse ‘Man of the Year’ in the Los Angeles region is an appropriate honor for Ryland.”

As a leader in the sport of lacrosse, Huyghue, has been solely responsible for the partnership of the lacrosse community and the International Diversity Lacrosse Council (IDLC) for over seven years. As the chief executive and founder of IDLC, he has been committed to increase the education, exposure, experience and participation of everyone in all levels of lacrosse throughout the world.

In addition to spreading the development of lacrosse through IDLC, Huyghue is also a Top 25 Poll Administrator for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association. The association provides a governing structure much like NCAA, with eligibility rules, All-Americans and a national tournament to decide national champions in both Division I and II. Huyghue is responsible for weekly ranking selections of the Top 25 ranked teams across the country.

As head coach for the 2014 St. John Bosco lacrosse team, he has coached the team to an improving record this season. He also led the lacrosse varsity to a third place finish in the California State Lacrosse Tournament.
