The start of school is only a month away and school district officials are busy getting everything ready for the return of students in September. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Christopher Van Cott gave a facilities update at the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
In the high school the new bathroom reconstruction project is almost completed, as is the exterior masonry restoration project. The three main doors to the school building have also been worked on, giving them a fresh new look.
“As far as the bathroom reconstruction goes, everything is right on schedule,” said Van Cott. “Just in case, though, if the new bathrooms are not ready for the start of school, the district has a contingency plan set up for use of the two sets of bathrooms on the first and second floor of the high school.”
In the Vernon School, the main gym and the butler building flooring resurfacing projects are currently under construction and will be ready for the new school year.
The school security project, which involves rewiring the alarm systems in each of the district’s three schools, has already been completed at the Vernon School.
“The Phase 3 security project is already completed at Vernon, 75 percent completed at Roosevelt and will be finished in the high school some time next week,” said Van Cott.
Van Cott said that one project that won’t be ready for the start of the school year is the renovation of the high school tennis courts, which was approved by the board in May.
“The architect’s designs for the courts are completed and the work has begun, but the court still needs to cure,” said Van Cott.
He added that buses will be available to shuttle players to Teddy Roosevelt Memorial Park in the interim.

Building visits are scheduled to take place on Aug. 27 at 8 a.m. to inspect each of the buildings before the start of the school year.
