Plainview-Old Bethpage Parkway Elementary School took the time to remember Long Island and New York City residents who lost their lives September 11, 2001 and those who put their lives in danger to rescue survivors. All students and faculty were joined by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Fire Department, Nassau County Police Department, veterans and state and local elected officials for a flag ceremony to commemorate the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
“We believe that it is our duty as educators to teach our students what happened September 11, 2001 and what it meant for America,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis. “Though the events that occurred were tragic, it is important that students realize the bravery and the union that resulted from that historic day.”
The students wore red, white and blue to the ceremony where they sang patriotic songs and planted flags in the ground around the flag pole and the school’s welcome sign. Christopher Levi, a veteran who lost his legs in Afghanistan, was joined by Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs and New York State Assemblyman Chuck Lavine in addressing the students during the ceremony.
