Syosset Runners Score In Aqua

Syosset runners Doug Berkowitz, John Mulvey and Theresa Sherne, each won an award in the third annual UJA-Federation of New York Summer’s Not Done Aqua Run, consisting of an 800 meter swim and three mile run, held at Tobay Beach on Sunday morning, Sept. 14.

Berkowitz completed the swim leg in 16 minutes, six seconds, and the run leg in 27 minutes, 59 seconds, for a total time of 44 minutes, five seconds earning him second place honors in the 40-44 age group. Mulvey completed the swim in 47 minutes, one second, and followed that with 47 minutes, four seconds in the run leg, for a total time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, five seconds. That was good for second place in the 70-74 age group.

Scherne competed in the new three mile “run only” that accompanied the main event, scoring in 28:18 for the three mile run to earn first place honors among the women in the 50-59 age group.

The entire net proceeds of the Aqua Run go to benefit UJA-Federation of New York, together with its 60,000 contributors and 100 agencies, and its efforts to transform the lives of 4.5 million people in New York, Israel, and around the world. The world’s largest community-based philanthropy, UJA-Federation raises funds that sustain the activities of health, human service, educational and community-building agencies, enabling it to help the sick and the hungry, connect children to their Jewish roots, and offer humanitarian relief to communities devastated by a crisis.

Race administration was handled by the Running Club, with Steve and Holly Jonas of Woodbury serving as the co-race directors, club vice president Mindy Davidson serving as the event coordinator, and Sue Fitzpatrick handling the volunteer assignments on race day.
