The NYS Department of the Transportation will be repaving the Northern State Parkway (NSP) between the Wantagh State Parkway (Exit 33) and the LIE/I495 (Exit 37A). Before the harsh winter weather season begins, the eastbound section of NSP between Wantagh State Parkway and the LIE/I495 will be repaved first. NSP travel lanes will be closed each night between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. These closures are expected to be in effect for about one month, weather permitting.
The night time lane closures are needed to repave the NSP in this area. The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement is being removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings. When the eastbound section is completed, the repaving operation on westbound NSP will resume in the spring of 2015. The project is being performed by Tully Construction Co., Inc. under contract with the NYSDOT.
As with most road improvement work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these nightly travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid delays.
For real-time travel information motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi . Drivers are reminded of the Move-Over Law that now includes all hazard vehicles with amber lights such as tow trucks and construction vehicles. On parkways and other major highways with multiple lanes, drivers must move to a travel lane away from a vehicle displaying amber, red, white, or blue flashing lights, or slow down. Violators face moving violation fines and points on their drivers’ licenses. Drivers should also be aware that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.
