Winter Swim Lesson Registration Announced

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children’s swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University swimming pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be six years of age by the start of the program to participate. This 10-week session will begin Saturday, Dec. 6. Classes are taught by Red Cross-certified instructors. The cost is $80. These classes are open to residents of the Incorporate Village of Garden City.

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills

Level 2 – For children who have taken a lesson but need to learn fundamental skills

Level 3 – Will build on fundamental skills by providing guided practices

Level 4 – Develops confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills

Level 5 – Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes

Level 6P – Personal Water Safety – stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.

Level 6F – Water Fitness – sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

Classes offered are as follows –

10 a.m. Level 1 (10 maximum) 10-1

10 a.m. Level 3 (10 maximum) 10-3

10 a.m. Level 4 (10 maximum) 10-4

10 a.m. Level 6F (12 maximum) 10-6F

11 a.m. Level 2 (10 maximum) 11-2

11 a.m. Level 3 (10 maximum) 11-3

11 a.m. Level 4 (10 maximum) 11-4

11 a.m. Level 5 (10 maximum) 11-5

Noon  Level 2 (10 maximum) 12-2

Noon Level 4 (10 maximum) 12-4

Noon Level 5 (10 maximum) 12-5

Noon Level 6P  (12 maximum) 12-6P

1 p.m. Level 1 (10 maximum) 1-1

1 p.m. Level 2 (10 maximum) 1-2

1 p.m. Level 3 (10 maximum) 1-3

1 p.m. Level 4 (10 maximum) 1-4

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

To register: by mail only, no walk-in registrations will be accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 3. The recreation and parks department cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or download it from www.gardencityrecreation.org. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade, and the classes for which you are registering with a first and second choice. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please make all checks payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City.

Pee-Wee Sports Sampler For 4 & 5 Year Olds

The Garden City Recreation Department will offer its popular Pee-Wee Sports Sampler program this winter for children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. This six-week program has been designed to provide an opportunity to try a wide variety of sports with basic instruction.

This program will take place in St. Paul’s Fieldhouse beginning the week of Dec. 1 and will run for one hour. Our Sampler will incorporate new skills and free play in a non-competitive atmosphere. A different sport will be offered each week. Classes will be held according to the following schedule:

Wednesdays 1:30 to 2:25 p.m.

Thursdays: Noon to 12:55 p.m. or 1:15 to 2:10 pm

Fridays: 1:30 to 2:25 p.m.

The cost of this program is $80.

Floor Hockey Begins In December

The Garden City Recreation and Parks Department is proud to announce it will once again offer a floor hockey program this winter on six Friday evenings in St. Paul’s Field House. The program will be open to village residents according to the following schedule:

Kindergarten and 1st grade (6:15 to 7:15 p.m.)

2nd and 3rd Grade (6:15 to 7:15 p.m.)

4th, 5th, and 6th Grade (7:30 to 8:30 p.m.)

All participants are required to wear the following equipment at all times: Hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, sneakers, and hockey stick. The cost of this program will be $40.
