Young Scholar Of Mathematics

Valery Marcos, a sophomore at Division Avenue High School, is among 84 students to be named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics. Marcos was accepted by SUNY College of

Old Westbury’s Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students to pursue advanced study of mathematics and mathematical scientific science applications.

Being named a Long Island Young Scholar of mathematics places Marcos among the top one percent in math out of all Long Island sophomores. Acceptance into the program was based on five criteria: a nomination, high school transcript, a teacher recommendation, a written statement by the student and a rigorous entrance exam.

Throughout the school year, Marcos will spend 60 hours during 20 Saturday math classes, where she will study algebra, geometry, discrete math, number theory and other topics not included in the standard school math curriculum, such as probability, modular math and tiling (computing).

Marcos is a member of the school’s mathletes team, Key Club and art club and is interested in pursuing a career in statistics or psychology upon graduation.
