A runaway horse was fatally struck by a tractor trailer on Sunrise Highway in Center Moriches early Thursday morning and authorities are searching for two other horses that escaped from a farm.

Suffolk County police said a 60-year-old man was driving a Peterbilt tractor trailer eastbound on Route 27 when the truck hit and killed a horse that was standing in the roadway one half mile west of Exit 59 shortly before 3 a.m. The driver was not injured.

Two other horses—which escaped from Double “D” Bar Ranch in Manorville—were spotted nearby, but are still missing, police said.

Authorities contacted the owner of the horses while the search continues for the two remaining horses. It is unclear how the horses escaped.

Police are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information about the incident or the missing horses to call 911. All calls will be kept confidential.
