It was an introduction to Engineering Design at the most recent Roslyn School District board meeting as Science teacher, William Marvin and Photography teacher, Richard Ritter discussed the course which is part of Project Lead the Way. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the nation’s leading provider of K-12 STEM programs.
ìWith Introduction to Engineering Design, students will dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science and engineering standards to hands-on projects,î said Marvin. ìThey will work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
The two teachers explained that an engineering notebook is a book in which an engineer formally documents in chronological order his/her work that is associated with a specific design project.
The reasons for the notebook is so the student can give a clear and detailed description of their design process and also so someone unfamiliar with the work could take over the project without additional information.
Having an engineering notebook will help the student prove the origin of the idea that lead to the solution, prove when events or ideas occurred, prove diligence in turning the idea into a solution and prove when an idea became a working solution.
Some of the topics covered in Engineering Design include the design process, technical drawing and sketching, measurement and statistic, modeling skills, geometry of design and reverse engineering.
According to Marvin, design process and instant challenges, design innovation, technical drawing and sketching and measurement and statistics have already been covered and the topics for the rest of the year will include modeling skills, geometry of design, reverse engineering, documentation and advanced computer modeling.
Other topics to be covered in the future will be (CIM) Computer Integrated Manufacturing and (CEA) Civil Engineering and Architecture.
The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.
