Winter Registration News

Registration for winter programs is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m. Registration for story times and special programs can be done online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Registration for book discussions must be done in person in the Children’s Room. For more information about Children’s story times, book discussions, and special programs, check online on Eventkeeper or in the Children’s Room for winter fliers beginning mid-December.

Children’s Chinese Auction

Children in grades K-5 who complete the requirements of the Children’s Winter Reading Club will receive an invitation for themselves and a parent or adult caregiver to attend the Children’s Chinese Auction on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. At the auction, children can use their book review cards earned during the Children’s Winter Reading Club as raffle tickets to win prizes. Children should be accompanied by an adult caregiver during the Chinese auction at all times. Children must be present at the auction to win a raffle from the auction. Prizes, including the amount available, will be determined by the prize donations received from outside organizations.

Drop-In Lego Club

The first meeting of the year for the Drop-In Lego Club will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 4 to 5 p.m. This monthly club is for children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition to Jan. 7, the Lego club will meet on the following Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m.: Feb. 4, March 4, April 1, and May 6. No registration is required, but space is limited. When arriving at the library, please come to the Children’s Room and get a number. Numbers will be distributed starting at 3 p.m. the day of the program. Children will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. The library will provide Lego bricks for children to build with during the program. The Drop-In Lego Club was made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Garden City Public Library as well as through Lego donations from library patrons.

The Art Of Zentangle With Joanne Van Meter

On Saturday, Jan. 24, Joanne Van Meter will be hosting  the Art of Zentangle. This fun art program will be held at 1 p.m. for children in grades kindergarten to 2 and at 2:15 p.m. for children in grades 3 to 5. Registration begins Monday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m. on Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). You must do a separate registration for each child you wish to attend the program. Please arrive promptly. If you are late, your spot may be given to someone on the wait list.

Lapsit Storytime

Lapsit Storytime is a story time for children ages 6 months -17 months with a parent or caregiver, featuring board books, rhymes, stories, and music. This is a 20-minute program and encourages parent and child participation and interaction. Sign up is for one session.

 Session I (born Aug. 2013 to July 2014):

• Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.: Jan. 20 to Feb. 24, except Feb. 17.

Session II (born Sept. 2013 to Aug. 2014):

• Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.: March 3 to March 31.

Mother Goose Storytime

Children ages 18 to 29 months and an adult caregiver can join our Mother Goose story time. This is a 30-minute introduction to story time, featuring a few simple, brief stories, rhymes, flannel stories, finger plays, and music. The focus is on parent and child interaction and participation. Sign up is for one session.  Session I (born August 2012 to July 2013):

• Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.: Jan. 20 to Feb. 24, except Feb. 17.

Session II (born September 2012 to August 2013):

• Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.: March 3 to March 31.

Children’s Winter Reading Club

The new Children’s Winter Reading Club is for children in Kindergarten through grade 5. Registration begins Monday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Children’s Room and is ongoing until Feb. 25. Children will read books and fill out review cards. For books under 100 pages, children will receive one review card for each book they read. For books over 100 pages, children will receive one review card for the book plus one review card for every additional 100 pages read. Children must read age-appropriate books. Once children have completed five book review cards, they will receive an invitation to the Children’s Chinese Auction on Feb. 26. Book review cards can then be used as raffle tickets during the auction. Parents are encouraged to make sure the name of their child is legible on their cards. The more you read, the more chances you have of winning.

You And Your Toddler Story Time

The theme of adult and children enjoying stories together continues on in the 30-minute You and Your Toddler program, for children ages 2½ to 3½ (born Aug. 2011 to Aug. 2012) and an adult. Children will enjoy several books, along with flannel stories, songs, rhymes and a short book-based film.

•Mondays at 11:30 a.m.: Feb. 2 to March 30, except Feb. 16.

•Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.: Feb. 3 to March 31, except Feb. 17.

Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org  for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
