On Monday, Jan. 5, Unqua Elementary and Berner Middle School were on a lock out (as opposed to lockdown), meaning that no one was able to leave the buildings or enter the buildings. The lock out lasted from about 3 to 4:50 p.m. and was the cause of police activity in area.
In a separate incident, Massapequa High School was in lock out on Thursday, Jan. 8 until about 9 p.m. because of police activity that was taking place adjacent to the school. All parents were notified via the automated voice messaging system, through automated emails and postings on the website.
Police said the incident began at approximately 5:15 p.m., on Jan. 8 when John Deignan, 22, of 151 Cartwright Blvd., was operating a 1991 White Honda heading east along Merrick Road. Deignan became involved in a verbal altercation with another driver and two passengers in the vicinity of Wantagh.
Although the other driver told police that Deignan brandished a handgun, no such gun was recovered. The victim called 911 and a police investigation led to Deignan’s identity. Police charged him with menacing, 2nd degree.
