Eworks lands e-waste contract sparked by state law
The Village of Stewart Manor board of trustees unanimously approved a contract last week for Freeport-based Eworks Electronics Services to handle electronic equipment disposal services.
Stewart Manor Mayor Gerard Tangredi said he had been authorized to negotiate the deal with Eworks by the village board. Under terms of the pact, Eworks, an electronics parts and equipment business, is to receive no compensation for providing the periodic collection services.
Rosemarie Biehayn, Stewart Manor village clerk-treasurer, said a new state law prohibits disposal of electronic waste for curbside garbage pick-up.
Tangredi said collection of electronic equipment would be conducted at central locations still to be determined in the village.
“There will be more information in the coming weeks as the program is scheduled,” Tangredi said.
Eworks is performing similar services for other municipalities in the area, Stewart Manor village attorney Benjamin Truncale said at last week’s village board meeting on Tuesday night.
The Village of Garden City recently signed an agreement for Eworks to provide electronic waste collection services.
New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro said last week his village is currently negotiating with EWorks for electronic waste collection services. Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss also said last week that the village board is considering a bid from EWorks on a contract to collect electronic waste in Mineola.
Eworks President Marl Wilkins was unavailable to comment on his company’s operations and current disposal service contracts.
Eworks will effectively recycle the electronics equipment by using parts from what it collects in its parts and repair business.
In other developments:
• Village residents can grieve their tax assessments at Stewart Manor Village Hall on Feb. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m., where property owners can grieve their village assessments. In order to file a grievance, residents must fill out the state form and provide evidence to support an unfair assessment.
• At Tuesday’s village board meeting, Tangredi commended members of the village Department of Public Works for their efforts in clearing village streets of snow from the five storms that struck in January. “These guys worked hard for many hours. I would just like to thank them,” Tangredi said.
• The village board will hold a public hearing on March 3 at 8 p.m. to hear comments on the village’s application to participate in the 41st year of the federal Community Development Block Grant Program.
