Mabel King

Mabel King of Port Washington, N.Y. and Hobe Sound, Florida died peacefully after a brief illness at the grand age of 96. Mabel was born Amable Donno in Manhasset to hard working Italian immigrant parents, Davide and Antonia Donno. She grew up in Manhasset and graduated from Manhasset High School where she excelled both academically and athletically. She was awarded membership in The Silver M Society, an honor of which she was very proud.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Joseph F. King on August 29, 1942. They remained partners for 64 years until his death in May 2006. They raised three children, Barbara (Bobbie), Thomas, and David. They resided in Port Washington since 1949.
As a young woman, Mabel worked as a telephone operator and as a seamstress and saleswoman in women’s shops in Manhasset and Port Washington. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making stylish clothes. Her other pastimes included bowling, golf, and cards. Mabel enjoyed the company of many friends and a large extended family. She was a member of Plandome Country Club and Hobe Sound Golf Club in Florida.
She is survived by her three children, Barbara K. O’Connor (M. Kevin), of Verona, N.J., Thomas J. King (Patricia nee Ward) of Port Washington and Fort Myers, Florida, and David C. King (Lynn nee Haggerty) of Petaluma, California, eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren She was affectionately dubbed GG by her great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Julius, Aldo, Dante, and Danny and their wives predeceased her.
Visitation at Fairchild Funeral Home in Manhasset and funeral mass at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Port Washington on March 12. Interment at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
