The students of Herricks High School are presenting an original comedic farce, The Ring and The Rose. The play is based on a fairy tale by William Makepeace Thackery. The Ring and
The Rose of the tile are enchanted, and cause the various characters of the play to fall in an out of love, which leads to all sort of confusion.
In the end, all is set right, but not before every character is thoroughly tested in unexpected and often hilarious ways. The Ring and The Rose performances are on March 13 and 14 at the Herricks High School auditorium at 100 Shelter Rock Rd. in New Hyde Park.
The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m., tickets are general admission, $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. They can be purchased at the box office at Herricks High School the night of the performances.
The fairy tale was written in about 1850. Director/adaptor Luke DeLalio learned of the story years ago, and tucked it away in the back of his mind as a possible work on which to base a theatre piece.
“Thackery created a twisting, very surprising plot, with so many unexpected things happening that it seemed to me to be a natural basis for a play,” said. DeLalio.
His adaptation, though, does deviate somewhat from the original storyline.
“I have a really lovely cast, and I wanted to feature everyone in it somehow,” he said. “So I added some characters. Thackery’s story has pitched battles with magic weapons—things that would require film style special effects, so I also had to solve those sorts of problems as well.”
DeLalio has directed more than 60 productions in his theatre career including several of his own plays. His last work in Herricks was four years ago when he directed Mary Zimmermann’s award winning Metamorphoses.
