M. Hasan Imam is a local writer who has published 24 books. He has lived in Port Washington for almost 30 years and two of his books can be found in the Port Washington Public Library. Those books, In Search of Light and Deprived Solicitation are both volumes of poetry.
Imam’s three children all graduated from Schreiber High School. Imam is a pharmacist by profession. “At one time I owned a pharmacy on Manorhaven Blvd,” said Imam.
Imam’s books are about humanity and mankind and the suffering of innocent people. Some of his books are about the beauty of nature. Imam has written in his diary on a regular basis for the past 30 years.
Imam grew up in Bangladesh. He always loved to read. When he was about thirteen, he and his friends had a competition to see who could read all the books in their small school library. “After all that reading, I suppose it might have inspired and shaped me to start writing,” he said. “I started writing as a student and submitted a detective story to a writing competition in the school.”
He lost his mother when he was about one and a half years old. He was extremely attached to his elder sister and later in life saw her as a mother figure. “After my sister passed away at a very early age in childbirth in 1969, I believe after that traumatic experience something happened inside me and a new world opened up with a new lifeline that led me to start writing poems. And that flow never stopped,” said Imam. He’s written 24 books. Twenty-two books are in Bengali, his native language. Of those, most are poetry and two are novels. He has translated two poetry books into English. These books are both in the Port Washington Public Library and are also available as ebooks.
