One of Plainview’s leaders in education was honored recently for her dedication to promoting a culture of learning in the community.
Dr. Lorna Lewis, superintendent of Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month. Lewis was one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.
Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. BOCES officials said these individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.
According to BOCES, Lewis has dedicated herself to the improvement of the community’s educational system. She has testified before the New York State Senate on the impact of testing, speaking as the voice of the New York State Council of School Superintendents. She also presented a paper about proposed graduation rates to the Commissioner of Education and the New York State Board of Regents, on behalf of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents.
The superintendent co-chairs the curriculum committee of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, serves on the Commissioner’s Advisory Committee for the Task Force for APPR, is president-elect for the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, serves on the Long Island STEM Hub Board of Champions and the SCOPE Board of Directors and is an active past-president with the Long Island Association for supervision and curriculum development. She is also a valued advisor to the New York State Education Department and the New York State Board of Regents.
“Dr. Lewis is a powerful educational leader, an authoritative expert on education and an outspoken student advocate,” said Susan Bergtraum, vice president of the Nassau BOCES Board. “Her top priorities are strengthening what is done in the classroom and opening up new opportunities for students, and she is unabashed in delivering her message of educational improvement.”
