On Jan. 31 and March 8, Troop 71 took advantage of this year’s Arctic blasts to tackle ice climbing in the Catskills. Organized by Assistant Scoutmaster Tom Wiebe, a total of twelve Scouts—Jay Wiebe, Trevor Cox, Patrick Sheehan, Vincent Tomaselli, Ryan Watson, Peter Boyadjian, Will Simone, Max Smith, Alex Hill, Ryan Connors, Aidan Dowd and Tom McGreal—all tested their mettle against a series of 30 to 40-foot ice formations lining the sheer cliff faces. Using the highly trained instructors from High-Xposure Adventures, the group was outfitted with the necessary equipment—ice axes, steel crampons, climbing boots, harnesses, helmets and belay ropes—as well as the training and guidance to lead all of the Scouts to successful and exhilarating climbs.
Given the overwhelming success of and response to the first outing, on the coldest day in January, the second outing was quickly added to this year’s Troop calendar. Patrick Sheehan and Max Smith each had a chance to lead the troop, and tackled multiple different climbs with aplumb. Each ascent had its own particular challenges and learning experiences. Alex Hill so enjoyed his climbing experiences that he stopped at the top of a cliff to savor the moment and enjoy a quick snack before beginning his rappel down. Eagle Scout Matt Savage displayed pure grit and determination in conquering one of the more difficult climbs of the day and just would not be denied reaching the top. Each Scout came away with his own personal victory and memories of the day. Learn more about Troop 71 at www.plandometroop71.com.
