Brave Men Needed

FiremanBuntingNassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined forces today to call for Volunteer Firefighters and to officially proclaim this upcoming weekend as “RecruitNY Weekend” in both Counties. This announcement is part of a statewide effort to increase volunteer firefighter numbers. Both County Executives were joined by Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) President Robert McConville. Raymond Maguire of the VEEB Fire Academy, local fire officials and volunteer firefighters.

“Volunteer firefighters protect our homes and communities twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week,” said County Executive Mangano. “They are our friends and neighbors, and they take pride in helping our communities whenever and wherever support is needed. Now more than ever, they need our help so they can continue to protect the residents of Nassau County. I encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter to visit their local firehouse during the RecruitNY weekend.”
Many volunteer fire departments across the state will open their doors to area residents this Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community, as part of a statewide recruitment program, RecruitNY.

Throughout the recruitment drive, fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouse and firefighter apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide activities and stations throughout the firehouse for visitors to participate in. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in the fire department.
