On Sunday, May 17, St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Roslyn Harbor held its annual Family Fun Run and Barbecue, benefiting both the religious education program and the food pantry.
The event was attended by over 200 parishioners, friends, and relatives. It included running events, a water balloon toss, balloon twisting, face painting, clowns, tee shirts, raffles and the barbecue. The weather cooperated with sunny, balmy conditions that were no doubt the result of the petitions of Sr. Patricia Koehler, the event’s coordinator and Rev. John McCartney, St. Mary’s pastor. The success of the event was due to the work of Regina Meade Lafaire and Alison Santoro-Smith, whose drive and energy permeated the 35-member committee. The result was a successful event that will be a benchmark for future barbecues.
The event was highlighted by younger members of the parish enjoying the day, accompanied, in many cases, by their grandparents, as they were entertained by the clowns, while helping themselves to cotton candy, face painting and the ice cream truck.
Up to 25 volunteers worked on the event, which was augmented by the attendees and the 20 sponsors who donated their money, services and supplies. Most visible among the volunteers was chief barbecuer, John Dussel and his staff of 12 helpers, who ran the barbecue and delivered outstanding food and curb side service directly towards the picnic tables.
