Leisure Club Ready For Summer

Leisureclubnews_061015AA final break in the fierce winter season found the Leisure Club back on track during the months of March and April. Weekly meetings resumed with their usual schedules and some new experiences for club members. In addition, holiday parties were the source of additional fun. Also an away trip and two local daytime trips offered a change in venue for the seniors.

Two guest speakers introduced some timely topics of interest to the group. Edward O Connor discussed the disconcerting increase in identity theft. He supplied several handouts and a booklet entitled Taking Charge—What to do if your identity is stolen. Club members learned about privacy choices for their personal financial information as well as healthcare scams.

The other program with guest speakers revolved around the rising need for many senior citizens to avail themselves of rehabilitation centers after falls and surgery have necessitated additional assistance for recovery. Janet Fex and Tanya Dagan extolled the advantages offered by the facility they represented, The Grand Pavillion, in Rockville Centre.

Generally, Bingo games and 50/50 drawings were part of the weekly agendas. However, on the days of business meetings birthdays and wedding anniversaries were also observed. Waldbaum’s $10 gift certificates were raffled off and a winner from both groups had a head start to his grocery shopping.

Leisureclubnews_061015BSt. Patrick’s Day and Easter celebrations added some spice to two weekly meetings. As Gerard Corbet played his rendition of Irish favorites on the synthesizer, club members relished the corned beef sandwiches and potato salad. Mayor Scott Strauss visited the group and presented a luscious cake for this saint’s day. An ice cream dessert, a treat from the club, ended a wonderful afternoon. Easter celebration was equally enjoyable with sandwiches and ice cream presented to club members by president Mike Coniglio. The festivities were enhanced with music provided by Joe Gargiulio.

Senior to Senior Day took place at Mineola High School recently. Senior citizens were invited to the school where they were served a light lunch by senior students. Club members were entertained with performances of the band and Rockettes and culminated in the viewing of the spring musical.

Another trip back to the high school took place when the Leisure Club group attended a pasta dinner fundraiser for the Mary Brennan INN, the largest soup kitchen on Long Island.

A final trip brought the senior group to Bethlehm, PA. They arrived at the Sands Casino ready to tempt fate. The lure of the slot machines and the call of the table games made for an exhilarating day.
March and April were busy days for the Leisure Club. Interesting guest speakers, table parties, trips, and weekly activities kept club members on the go. June meetings are sure to offer more of the same.
