Kayak Run Returns

KayakRun071515CAPBPaddling around Manhasset Bay on Saturday, July 18 at the Port Washington-Manhasset Bay Kayak Run will not only be a fun Town event, but a win-win for everyone. The tax deductible entry fees will go to the Community Chest, a Port Washington 501 (c)(3) organization that helps Port Washington residents in need.

The annual event, now in its 11th year, is presented by the Town of North Hempstead and the Community Chest, with major assistance from Atlantic Outfitters. The family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m. with a blast from a canon, as participants take off in kayaks (or canoes and paddleboards) on Manhasset Bay. Participants paddle at their own pace, leisurely or full steam ahead, along the Bay’s five mile course, to designated locations where they check in. At 12:30 p.m., upon hearing the canon fire again, paddlers go ashore and head for the Town Dock, where a raffle drawing is held. The top prize winner receives a kayak, and many other prizes are given away.

According to Run Director and Community Chest board member Joel Ziev, “everyone is welcome, and no experience is necessary.” Registration forms are available at the Town Dock, Atlantic Outfitters on Inspiration Wharf, West Marine, or at PortChest.org. Entry fees are $25 for adults ($45 if paid on July 18) and $5 for those under 21 ($25 if paid on July 18). Forms and entry fees should be dropped off or mailed to Atlantic Outfitters, Inspiration Wharf, 405 Main Street or to the Community Chest of Port Washington, 382 Main Street.

Participants are welcome to bring their own kayak, canoe or paddleboard. Discounted kayak rentals are also available at Atlantic Outfitters. Call Atlantic Outfitters in advance for kayak information or to reserve a kayak at 516-767-2215. Kayaks may be launched from the Town Dock or Manorhaven Park.

All proceeds go to the Community Chest of Port Washington and the 26 nonprofit organizations that receive grants. For more information, call The Town of North Hempstead 311 center, the Community Chest of Port Washington at 516-767-2121, or email jdziev@aol.com.
