Now that he has played his last concert at Nassau Coliseum, Billy Joel deserves a street in his name. And it should be dedicated before and not after the Piano Man’s death. This will take some planning. Guy Lombardo Boulevard in Freeport was easier because he lived across the bay within sight of the former South Grove Street.
Picking the right spot for Billy will take a little more imagination.
The state legislature in Albany first thought in 2014 that a quarter-mile stretch of Route 107 in Hicksville, Billy’s hometown, might be fine. But the location must be more Joelful than his hometown and longer than four football fields. How about Oyster Bay or Bayville where he has lived recently and infamously crashed his motorcycle. There is quite a nice and well-trafficked road along the water there that could certainly fill the bill.
How about a contest for fans to offer suggestions? The winner could be invited to the name-changing ceremony.
