The Syosset-Woodbury Rotary Club recently celebrated and installed their new officers for 2015-16 at a dinner at Angelina’s II. The officers are president Bob Mittleman, vice president Warren Church, co-treasurers Virgilio Baez and Jay Nathan and secretary Moira Patterson.
Past president Maria Anderson was presented with an engraved barometer as a thank you for serving as president for the past two years and an evening of fellowship continued between rotarians and their families. Paul Harris Awards were also presented this year to Greg Chabina and Virgilio Baez, in recognition of their service to the Syosset-Woodbury Rotary.
Rotary celebrated many great happenings during the past year. These included the Syosset High School Gift of Life project, in which Rina, a girl from Kosovo, received heart surgery at St. Francis Hospital. Rina was sponsored by funds from the Interact Club and hosted by the Syosset-Woodbury Rotary. Syosset-Woodbury Rotary has been the sponsor of the Interact Club since 1989 and has supported joint projects through the years.
Eight Syosset High School seniors were proud recipients of scholarships this past June. In addition, the rotary has monthly food pantry collections for the INN, a joint holiday party for the Town of Oyster Bay Group Activity and Thanksgiving baskets for the needy.
Syosset-Woodbury Rotary has also been the sponsor of Project Milo, a project organized by a group of Syosset High School students. Project Milo participants developed an outstanding technology program and connected it with senior and rehab institutions, White Oaks and Cold Spring Hills, and are now launching an interactive program for families of residents to visit, via Skype.
The Syosset-Woodbury Rotary is a member of Rotary International. Meetings are held on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at Angelina’s II, 30 Berry Hill Rd. in Syosset. Anyone wishing to learn more about the club and membership can contact Dr. Eileen Gentilcore at genheart@optonline.net.
