Letter: Farewell, Thrift Shop

Mrs. Jones Attic Thrift Shop was established in 1993 on the grounds of Jones Manor Adult Home in Bayville. The home was a not-for-profit, registered charity. The trustees who oversee the Jones Fund sold the facility in 2014 to a for-profit company. On Aug. 3, the thrift shop was ordered to close as rent would now have to be paid for use of the building.

Over the 22 years, it was a privilege to know and support in some small way the residents of Jones Manor: Billy, the original piano man, if you could hum it, he could play it; Tony, a retired New York City cab driver; Marion, who learned to writer her name at Jones Manor; Pierce, who always played the ghost at Halloween; Josephine, a retired seamstress with a great sense of humor; Ruth, the biggest Englebert Humperdink fan; Paul, a musician with a lovely baritone voice; Amy, the dancing senorita; Rosie, who at 95, felt blessed to be at “home” like so many other beautiful souls at Jones Manor.

A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who gave so generously of their time and energy. Thank you to the staff of Jones Manor, who cared for the residents with love and compassion. A special thank you to all who shopped and donated to Mrs. Jones Attic Thrift Shop for 22 years.
