The Town of North Hempstead board recently approved a local law that utilizes state legislation to raise the maximum income limits for the Senior Citizen and Disabled Rent Increase Exemptions (SCRIE and DRIE).
“Senior citizens and the disabled are some of our most vulnerable residents who need our support,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “By approving this legislation and raising the income levels, we can improve their quality of life and stretch their dollars.”
The local legislation, which was approved unanimously on Sept. 29, raises the maximum income limits to $40,000 for the Senior Citizens and Disabled Rent Increase Exemptions. This will allow qualified residents, who are senior citizens or disabled and meet eligibility requirements, to qualify for a rent increase exemption.
“We are always looking for ways to support our residents. Increasing the income limit for SCRIE and the introduction of DRIE just made sense to provide for meaningful support to our seniors and those that are disabled. For some it will no longer mean having to make a choice between paying the rent and eating a healthy meal,” said Councilwoman Viviana Russell.
Bosworth and Russell expressed thanks to New York State Homes & Community Renewal (HCR) Deputy Counsel Chuck Lesnick for introducing the program to the town and offering assistance through the process.
