Applications are available for the 8th Annual Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation/Archangel Michael 5K/1K Walk/Run on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m., at a new and larger venue at North Hempstead Beach Park, 175 Shore Rd.

The race, which attracted more than 200 participants last year, honors the memory and fight for life of Tom Zangas, a triathlete and marathoner who died from lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 40. Proceeds from the race go to the foundation for its work to fund research into lung cancer and to Archangel Michael Church of Port Washington. To date more than $150,000 has been raised for cancer research and two grants for advanced research have been made.

The Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation was founded by Tom’s parents, Leonard and Penelope Zangas, to honor Tom’s memory and raise funds to fight lung cancer. Earlier this year the foundation was selected to fund important research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for researching the mechanisms through which cancer cells become resistant to drugs. The initial grant-funded research at Yale University is leading to increased understanding of how aggressive lung cancer cells hijack the machinery of a normal lung cell to adapt and thrive in other organs.
