A bird called a magpie is a collector of pebbles, chicken feathers, broken glass, and other items which it uses to build its nest. An inspired housewife once thought of placing a crust around a small pot of stew. People liked it and started calling it pie because it was full of a variety of meats, fowl, fish, vegetables or an egg or two. Therefore, any dish with a variety of items in it is now called a pie.
