Brand new to Massapequa is the New School of Performing Arts. This school offers classes focusing on theater and music, but also includes movement training. The music classes are a unique offering of percussion ensemble following an approach to teaching music that was devised by composer, Carl Orff and dancer, Gunild Keetman.
In this approach, students learn to perform on instruments maintaining a fluid beat while singing. The movement instruction strengthens the inextricable connection between our bodies, beat and music. The school also includes instruction following a philosophy developed by Swiss musician and educator, Emile Jaques Dalcroze. Very much in sync with the Orff methodology, Dalcroze focuses on three main components: Eurhythmics, which trains the body in rhythm and dynamics, Solfege, which trains the ear, eye and voice in pitch, melody and harmony and Improvisation, bringing all elements together according to the students own invention in movement, through singing or on an instrument.
The theater classes train students in traditional stage craft, building on each child’s individual strengths and broadening their experience. They learn to use their voices correctly to project, enunciate, and transfer a specific intention through the use of their body and voice. There are regular performances to give all students the chance to practice their skills and engage an audience.
Come this Friday, Dec. 18 to see the very first performance of New School of Performing Arts. It takes place at 4:45 p.m. in the Massapequa Bar Harbor Library. Free admission and a small reception to follow.
