Wheelchair basketball players at the Henry Viscardi School got the surprise of a lifetime when Harlem Globetrotter Hawk Thomas visited the Albertson school on Thursday, Dec. 10.
Prior to playing 11 games in the New York area, Harlem Globetrotters star Hawk Thomas played wheelchair basketball with disabled youth at the Viscardi School and spoke to a group of 160 local students with physical disabilities. Hawk also learned from the students, as this will be his first time playing wheelchair basketball.
As the Ambassadors of Goodwill, the Globetrotters granted a request from the staff at the Henry Viscardi School. During their 90th year, the Globetrotters have ramped up their community efforts through their “Great Assist” initiative.
Via GreatAssist.com, fans can submit stories to the Globetrotters and recommend a person or a cause that may be in need of a smile or their support. Throughout the tour, the Globetrotters will give back and grant “assists” in 250 North American cites.
As part of their world tour that will celebrate 90 years, the Globetrotters will play a total of 11 games in the New York area from Dec. 27 to Jan. 3, including at Hofstra, The Garden and in Brooklyn. The game schedule and ticket information are available at www.harlemglobetrotters.com/nyc.
