Congregants of all ages and members of the local community attended a stimulating presentation about advance care planning and end-of-life decision-making hosted by the Brotherhood of Temple Judea.
Representatives of the Northwell Health System, including Steven Walerstein, M.D. shared factual information as well as advice based on their professional experiences to help those in attendance prepare for the medical and legal decisions that they and their loved ones must eventually make.
Walerstein offered anecdotes illustrating the importance of communication among family members regarding their wishes as well as with their physicians. The various legal forms that should be completed to ensure compliance with those wishes also were distributed.
The presentation was followed by a lively question-and-answer period that built upon what had been presented earlier.
“The CHAT Project promotes conversation on a subject we all need to address – advance care planning,” said Rabbi Todd Chizner of Temple Judea.
Chinzer further noted how that conversation could lead to others that might include consideration of the Jewish position on related matters such as organ donation.
“I’m pleased that the Brotherhood of Temple Judea was offered the opportunity to host this program, which can help families to avoid unnecessary upset and regret at what is already a sad and stressful time,” added Stan Goldklang, Brotherhood president. “I look forward to our continuing to learn more from the CHAT Project team in the future.”
