Soup Supper For Homeless Veterans

Our Lady of Fatima Church is holding its annual Soup Supper to raise money for homeless veterans on March 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Parishioner Jane Candido has been running the event for about eight years. “Parishioners make about seven different kinds of delicious soups,” said Candido. “We invite all community members to come enjoy the soup lunch and ask them to offer a monetary donation for homeless veterans.” Drinks are also served.

They also collect toiletries and other items for homeless veterans.

“We have a guest speaker from the county who works with homeless vets,” said Candido. The speaker is from the Department of Veteran Affairs in Nassau County.

The event is free but they ask for a free-will donation that is equal to what you would have paid if you went out to dinner.

“In the past we have sent a check to the Department of Veteran Affairs and it has been used to buy furniture for veterans who have gotten housing and for stand downs, where they bring the homeless vets in for a shower, haircut and a meal,” said Candido. “The adults and children at the supper divide the toiletries into bags to give to the homeless vets.”

The event is held at the Our Lady of Fatima Church Center at 42 Manorhaven Blvd. For information, call 516-944-8322.
