Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the town board, in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, will offer a 4H Junior Master Gardener (JMG) Program at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson this spring and summer. The JMG program is open to children grades 3 to 5 and is broken up into two courses: The Wildlife Gardener and Health & Nutrition from the Vegetable Garden.
The Wildlife Gardener course is a combined resource of the National Wildlife Federation and the JMG Program. Children will gain a greater understanding and strengthen appreciation for the wildlife that is part of their local community, and enjoy hands-on, project-based learning as they have fun gardening for wildlife, building components of a wildlife gardening habitat and learning about leadership, team building and the importance of community service. The last two sessions will include a visit from a Forest Ranger and a community service project. This course will take place on May 7, 14 and 21, and June 4, 11 and 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost for the course is $125 per child.
In the Health and Nutrition course, children will learn how to grow and eat nutritious foods. Course participants will learn skills such as basic gardening, growing techniques, and harvesting, as well as recipes, healthful snacks, and how to create a farm stand. The last two sessions will include life skills and career exploration, with a visit from a nutritionist and a community service project. This course will take place on June 30, July 7, 14, 21 and 28 and Aug. 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost for the course is $125 per child.
