Annual DAR Essay Winners

The North Riding Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held an awards ceremony for winners of its essay contests—Good Citizen Essay Contest, American History Essay and Flag Essay contests. The luncheon was held at the Manhasset Public Library and DAR awarded the essay contest winners a certificate. Winners read their essays at the luncheon. Participants were from St. Peter of Alcantara School, Schreiber High School and Manhasset High School.

The Good Citizen Award is judged upon the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Winners of the High School Good Citizens Essay Contest from the North Riding Chapter were Shannon Rybecky from Schreiber High School and Julia Henry from Manhasset High School. Henry was judged the winner of the DAR District X and XI as well.

The title of the American History Essay Contest for all students this year was “A Colonial Family’s Reaction to the Stamp Act.”

The winners were: Brigid Byrnes, grade 5; Elizabeth Conneely, grade 6; Grayson Cuneo, grade 7; Matthew Young, grade 8.

The winner of the 5th grade American History Essay Contest was St. Peter’s 5th grader Brigid Byrnes, who was the New York State winner as well.

The winner of the DAR Flag Essay Award was 6th grader Nicholas Bianco. The essay was titled, “What the United States flag means to me.”
