Bob Chiappone, a member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during the Vietnam War, visited Carle Place High School to discuss his wartime experiences with Mr. Woythaler’s English 12 classes and Mr. Morris’s Literature of the 1960s elective class. This presentation supplemented the students’ reading of Tim O’Brien’s novel of the war, The Things They Carried, published in 1990. In addition to sharing intimate stories of the war, students were treated to Chiappone’s scrapbooks and personal memorabilia such as his flak jacket that he attributes to saving his life.
