The closed pedestrian overpass was the topic of discussion with the president of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and local government officials recently.
Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio had met with LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski last week to discuss the railroad’s plan to replace the pedestrian overpass at the Port Washington Railroad Station, which was closed on June 29 after the bridge was found to be structurally unsound. The overpass allowed passengers an alternative way to exit onto Bayles Avenue. Nowakowski stated that the LIRR plans to replace the overpass with a prefabricated structure.
The new overpass will have no impact on the number of parking spaces that currently exist in the commuter lot.
“The LIRR has been, and continues to be, a wonderful partner to the town,” said Bosworth. “They have worked closely with us on this issue and understand our desire to get the overpass replaced so that our commuters can have safe and easy passage over the tracks. President Nowakowski has given me his assurance that he plans to have the new prefabricated overpass up as soon as possible.”
The southside staircase for the pedestrian overpass at Port Washington Station has been partially closed until further notice.
As a result, access to the south side parking lot is temporarily unavailable from the overpass.
According to the LIRR website, “Customers must use the staircases on the north side of platforms A and B. We apologize for the inconvenience. For additional information, call 511 and say LIRR.”
