A 76-year-old man was killed when he crashed his car in his hometown of West Islip on Friday night.

Suffolk County police said Walter Kneibert was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on Sunrise Highway when he exited the highway onto the Service Road, lost control of the car and struck a utility pole west of the Robert Moses Causeway at 11:25 p.m.

The driver and his 72-year-old wife, Ruth Kneibert, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead. Ruth was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
