The Woman’s Club of Great Neck presented annual college scholarship awards to high school seniors for academic excellence, extracurricular activities and community service. The five winners each received a $1,000 award during the club’s monthly luncheon on Wednesday, June 7.
The honored students are Jason Callaghan of Northampton, MA; Marielle Donovan-Muller of Tampa, FL; Patrick Lewis of Great Neck; Kaitlin Mangels of Valhalla, NY; and Ryan Motchkavitz of Great Neck.
In the fall, Callaghan will attend University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Donovan-Muller will attend University of Florida; Lewis will attend College of the Holy Cross; Mangels will attend Fairfield University; and Motchkavitz will attend University of Delaware.
Elizabeth Louise Feaster, chair of the club’s Philanthropy Committee, and Marcia Muller, club president, presented the awards. Donovan-Muller and Callaghan were unable to attend the ceremony, but their grandmothers, Marcia Muller and Marianne de los Santos, respectively, accepted the awards on their behalf.
Last year, the Woman’s Club of Great Neck celebrated its 100th anniversary. The club was organized in 1916, admitted to the Long Island Federation of Woman’s Clubs in 1925 and incorporated in 1927. As a founding member and benefactor, Francoise Barstow was a great leader in the community whose accomplishments have survived for nearly a century. To this day, the Woman’s Club of Great Neck lends support to scholarships, various charities, food pantries, provides hand-knit blankets and hats for newborns, and is involved in many other philanthropic projects.
