I was raised in Port Washington, and after a 13 year residence in Bermuda, moved back to my home town and raised my two daughters. I went into real estate almost 30 years ago often saying to customers that Port Washington is an easy product to sell for many reasons, some of which are our diversity, our beautiful waterfront, and wonderful schools. Being that we often only hear negative news on a daily basis, I want to take the time to thank some Port Washington residents for their kindness, gentleness, and quick action on March 9th along Mackey Avenue.
I was taking my daily five mile walk when I tripped over a tree branch in the road and took a horrific fall. Because I was going down hill, I hit my face and, as it turned out, shattered my knee cap. With blood pouring from my mouth and excruciating pain from my knee, I sat on the side of the road in a stunned silence not being able to move.
Within seconds, one woman pulled over and jumped out of her car running over to assist me. Then another, another, another; all in all about six to seven people stood beside me offering tissues to stop the blood, calling 911 because I could not move, and waiting there with me with kind reassuring words until the ambulance arrived. They did not leave until I was safely in the ambulance, and I am sure, then went on their way to work or to their chores.
While I have always known that nice people live in our town, I was pleased to see this very caring demonstration that was directed at me personally.
My sincere thanks to all of you who took the time out of your busy day to help me on that day. I had surgery to put my knee cap back together and am hobbling around getting better each day. But thanks to your kindnesses and reassurances, what could have have been a more frightening experience was not, reaffirming my belief that Port Washington is a great place to live.
