The Onyx Olympians, the local VEX IQ robotics team, hosted a Girl Powered robotics workshop in Great Neck House during the afternoon on Oct. 21.
The goal was to encourage girls to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), especially robotics, and to give back to Great Neck community, according to event initiator Chloe Ning.
When she first learned about the workshop in August, Ning applied for support from the Girl Powered organization. Fortunately, her application was approved, which provided the free robotics pieces to make the workshop possible.
During the two-hour event, about 10 elementary-age girls packed the room with the team, where they built simple gears and lifts, learned robot programming and remote controlled a competition-ready robot.
Onyx Olympian team members who hosted the event included Sophia Li, Chloe Ning, Michael Sun, Sarah Sun, Kalvin Xu, Julia Xu and Ellen Zhang.
The participants thoroughly enjoyed the event, and afterward some parents were exploring ideas to create a new robotics team.
