This past weekend, the Island Trees girls varsity soccer team played in the Hall of Fame Tournament in Niskayuna. Fifty-two teams from all throughout New York participated, including several Long Island clubs.

On Saturday, the girls were matched up against Tamarac, and came away with a 3-0 victory to start their season. Sophomore Casey Papp started the team off with a goal in the first half, while both Caroline Meyer and Gianna McGowan (juniors) added one each in the second half to seal the deal. Meyer also dealt an assist, as did Caroline Barrera. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Jablonowski was credited with seven saves in the first game as she, along with a solid defense of Madison McCormick, Courtney Martin, Emily Carbonaro, Dylann Ries and Alyssa Mayo, held Tamarac for a shutout game.

On Sunday, the girls took on another group of Bulldogs, these being from South Glenn Falls. The girls took control of this closely matched game when sophomore Nicole McCrea scored in the 36th minute of the first half. Three goals were added in the second half by Casey Papp, Caroline Meyer and Gianna McGowan to guarantee a winning weekend for Island Trees. Julianna Fleischer, Caroline Meyer and Jennifer Waldron were credited with assists.

The Island Trees offense had several opportunities thanks to Jennifer Waldron and Rebecca Gersbeck. And once again, the team’s defense was strong and Lauren Jablonowski was credited with another seven saves for a complete shutout weekend, which was good enough to come home with a championship plaque.

The girls are now 2-0 overall on the season and look to carry this momentum moving forward to our league games this week.
