Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker of Plainview has secured a $20,000 grant from the county’s Hotel-Motel Occupancy Tax fund for Plainview’s Mid-Island Y JCC (MIYJCC). The funding was approved unanimously by the Nassay County Legislature during the Monday, Sept. 23 meeting.
“With this $20,000 grant, our goal is to expand our Cultural Arts Programming,” said Rick Lewis, chief executive officer of the JCC. “The community is looking for new and innovative programming to be held here at the MIYJCC. This will enable the expansion of a variety of programs and the implementation of new and innovative ones. Our programs will be showcased in a variety of mediums to encourage attendance by members of the community and visitors to the community alike.”
The JCC will utilize those funds to expand its cultural arts department to include an author’s book series; a film series; studio arts; poetry and music; master classes; adult performing arts, dance and movement; community repertory theater and a youth center for the performing arts.
“The Mid-Island Y JCC has grown to become a focal point of Plainview and its surrounding communities that meets the needs of more than 18,500 people every year,” said Drucker. “Through this grant, they will be able to further expand their reach and provide new and innovative programming that enriches the lives of the people they serve. I am grateful for my colleagues’ unanimous support and thank Rick Lewis and his outstanding team for all they do.”
The JCC has long offered a plethora of services for local community members of all ages. Their services include swimming and exercise facilities; school tutoring; programming for special needs individuals; and assistance in many forms, including access to social workers and their fully stocked food pantry for those in need.
