Sewanhaka Students Receive Research Awards

This year, H. Frank Carey High School students enrolled in courses in Introduction to Science Research and Science Research 1, 2, 3 and 4 competed and presented their work in science fairs and symposiums.

Events that the classes attended were sponsored by the Long Island Science Congress (LISC), the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF), the South Asian American Women’s Alliance (SAAWA), Society for Science’s Regeneron Science Talent Search, Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and PSEG EM-Powered Program, as well as at the Carey High School Science Fair and the Sewanhaka Central High School District Science Research Symposium.

Students worked on their research projects throughout the entire academic year and presented their findings to both fellow students and professions, including scientists and professors. Some students worked individually, while others worked in pairs.

Winners in the Junior Division of the
Long Island Science Congress

Junior Division
In the Junior Division, Onyx Karejwa, Shivani Pillai, Christopher Sebber and Allyson Xu earned High Honors.
In addition to earning High Honors, Karejwa and Sebber’s project “The Effect of Hydrocarbon Compound Pollution on the Survival of Artemia salina,” earned the Green Planet Award ($50).
Also within the Junior Division, Makayla Grill, Hannah John and Savannah Torregrossa earned Achievement.
Additionally, the division recognized students Joseph Barker, Ella Barlow, Matthew Cangelosi, Nyrie Jeanty, Emma Kirrane, Lily Maglio, Valerie Morales Luna, Sophia Phan, Diya Prince, Emily VanDunk and Samantha Walter with Meritorious.
Lastly, Grady Govaert, Lucas Koehler, Haleigh Kolmos and Kylie Rapp earned Honorable Mention.

Winners in the Senior Division of the
Long Island Science Congress

Senior Division
In the Senior Division, Michelle Zheng earned Highest Honors, as well as received the Long Island Science Congress Award ($50) and the Director’s Award ($50) for her project, “Determining the Most Effective Lateral Ankle Ligament Surgery Technique.”
Also within the senior division, Ivan Chin, Jamie David, Christoper Dizon, Natalie Osorio, Daniele Russo and Annmarie Schurr earned Honors.
Additionally, Ewan Byrne, Christina Daniel, Megan Heinimann, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel, Abeer Qureshi, Laeeba Samad and Fia Thomas earned Meritorious.
Vincenzo Mari and Gabriela Valentin earned Honorable Mention.

The following students are 23-24 NYSSEF award recipients:
Jamie David and Natalie Osorio earned Honorable Mention in the Engineering category.
Michelle Zheng earned first place
Abeer Qureshi and Laeeba Samad earned second place in the Medicine and Health category.
Christopher Dizon, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel and Daniele Russo earned third place in the Environmental Sciences category.
The following students were recognized for their work at the Carey High School Science Fair:
At the Senior High level, Ivan Chin and Annmarie Schurr earned first place; Jamie David and Natalie Osorio earned second place; and Christina Daniel, Kaitlyn Jamet, Eshaan Kandel and Fia Thomas earned third place.
