The New York Bamboo Music Society will present an immersive and interactive musical lecture featuring a variety of bamboo instruments from different cultures across the world at the Great Neck Library on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
Instruments that will be featured and played include the African thumb piano, Indonesian angklung and non-mouth-nose-played gromblong, as well as the Peruvian pan flute.
A representative for the library said distinctive and rare Chinese bamboo instruments will also be included, such as the Yao ethnic group’s traditional zharong, the world’s smallest whistle at just 4.6 cm, the well-known yet seldom-seen Qiang flute, exquisite ancient palace pan flutes, and the massive dragon drum made from the world’s thickest bamboo.
Presenter Wang Wei is a member of the Chinese Musicians Association and the Founder and Leader of the Beijing Bamboo Orchestra and the New York Bamboo Music Association. He has given many seminars on bamboo musical art in venues such as the National Grand Theater, Beijing University, the China Opera Institute, the Beijing Institute of Technology, and the Guangxi Library.
The New York Bamboo Music Society aims to raise environmental awareness through lectures, performances, and bamboo instrument exhibitions, encouraging people to cherish resources and protect the environment for a better home.
