Rooted in tradition and focused on the future, Zorn’s of Bethpage is proving that sustainability and community can go hand in hand. January’s PSEG Long Island Small Business Star, owner Merrill Zorn shares how energy-efficient investments, mindful practices, and a commitment to giving back help keep this beloved Long Island institution thriving responsibly.
What do you love about being in this business/being an owner?
The people. From longtime customers who have been visiting us for decades to new guests discovering Zorn’s for the first time, it’s all about connection. Being part of family traditions, celebrations, and memories is what makes this work so meaningful.
How do you feel your business impacts the local community?
We take pride in supporting local charities and helping to feed neighbors in need. While we often hear gratitude from the community, our motivation has always been to give back. That commitment is a big part of why we’ve been here for so many years.
How did PSEG Long Island’s Business First Program support you?
PSEG Long Island offers various incentives through their Business First program. Our new building was designed with energy efficiency as a top priority, from lighting to kitchen equipment to overall operations. We are always looking for ways to reduce energy usage and run a more efficient store and look forward to the opportunity to work with PSEG Long Island to continue to reduce costs and improve our energy efficiency.
What role do you think small businesses play in promoting energy efficiency within the broader community?
Small businesses can lead by example. Choosing energy-saving equipment, maintaining it properly, and being mindful of daily practices such as turning off lights, keeping equipment running efficiently, and shutting down gas pilots and electric units when not in use. Small changes can add up to meaningful impact.
How do you feel about being a Small Business Star?
It’s an honor to be recognized for the efforts that happen behind the scenes. Initiatives that aren’t as visible as our food but are just as important to who we are.
