Even though winter has an icy grip on the calendar, the Town of North Hempstead is already looking ahead to summer and those who help make it safe, memorable, and fun. The town is now accepting applications for lifeguards to join the summer team at one of its six indoor or outdoor aquatic facilities.

Positions are available at both town beaches and at one of its six pools, with flexible schedules that make the job ideal for students, teachers, or anyone looking for meaningful seasonal work. Candidates also have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week. The salary is competitive, starting at $18 per hour for pool guards and $20 per hour for beach guards.

The position offers candidates a chance to work outdoors, build leadership and lifesaving skills, and play a vital role in protecting families and visitors during the busiest months of the year. The experience is particularly valuable for young people seeking to build their resumes.

“Long Island is all about summer fun, but none of it would be possible without our lifeguards,” Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said. “They’re leaders, teammates and first responders, and our neighbors really see them as the backbone of their summers in the parks.”

Candidates must take the American Red Cross lifeguard certification course, which the town offers at Michael J. Tully Park. To register, email parks@northhempsteadny.gov or call (516) 739-3055. Applicants also must obtain a Nassau County lifeguard certification by contacting the Nassau County Aquatic Center at (516) 572-0500.

Parks Commissioner Kelly Gillen added, “Everyone dreams of a summer job in the sun, but if you want to secure your spot, now is the best time to apply.”

Anyone who enjoys working with people, staying active and making a difference in their community is encouraged to apply. Prior lifeguard experience is helpful but not required. Applicants must be at least 15 years old.
