Mineola’s trustees unanimously approved a special use permit for a My Gym, a children’s fitness chain, at its Feb. 11 meeting.
The business will be located at 530 Jericho Turnpike, in Unit C, which abuts Clarissa Road in the shopping center.
Erik Snipas, a Greenberg Traurig attorney representing My Gym, said that the franchise will provide children from ages of six weeks to ten years a place to learn, play, and develop physically and cognitively.
He said the business will offer classes, such as gymnastics, and hold small events, such as birthday parties.
Village residents addressed the board during public comment, raising concerns about parking, deliveries, and children’s safety during pick-up and drop-off.
The applicant said the gym is well within the village’s parking requirements, with ample parking available in the center’s 216 spaces.
He said the 30-year-old company operates over 700 locations worldwide, including Long Island locations in Babylon, Plainview, Huntington and Stony Brook.
Trustees unanimously approved the special use permit application.
“I cannot think of a less onerous use of that space,” Mayor Paul Pereira said.
The board also unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the board to pierce the tax cap if necessary.
“Every year we take this vote,” Pereira said. “We have never pierced the tax cap. We will not pierce the tax cap this year.”
He said the village’s counsel advised the board to pass this authorization in case New York State funding is significantly less than budgeted.
The resolution passed unanimously.
